Cambodia – Ta Prohm, near Angkor Wat

The noble trees approach. Slender and fair, the herald promises enlightenment.

Soon the trees surround the walls of stone. Is this beneficence or menace?

They top the ramparts. The invasion begins.

The trees swallow the stone.

They spread their pale tentacles, oozing across and within the stone, dislodging bonds without regard.

All recognize their mortality. But how to live, as the apocalypse approaches?

The trees know loss, too. In some quarters, battered veterans on both sides coexist in respectful opposition – for now.

Isolated by the onslaught, an untouched district decays from within,

while a pocket of resistance struggles to continue the old ways.

Still, the trees are inexorable. The flag has been planted.
